Differences POP3 and IMAP

POP3 and IMAP are two different protocols (methods) used to access email.

The recommended option in both of them is IMAP when we need to check our emails from multile devices such as laptop, a home computer, tablet, smartphone tc.

POP3 ( Post Office Protocol )


  • We can use only one computer to check our email, no other devices can allowed
  • Our mails are stored on the computer that we use
  • Sent mail is stored locally on our PC, not on a mail server
IMAP - Internet Messaging Access Protocol

  • We can use multiple computers and devices to check our email
  • Our mail are stored on the server
  • Sent mail stays on the server so you can see it from any device

Configure IMAP:

We can retrieve our Gmail messages with a client or device that supports IMAP like microsoft Oultook or Apple Mail.

Enable IMAP in Gmail Setting


  1. Sign in to Gmail
  2. Click setting in the top of rightn
  3. Clcik forwarding and POP/IMAP
  4. Select enable IMAP
  5. Click save changes

Configur  POP3:

We can retrieve our Gmail messages with a client or device that supports IMAP like microsoft Oultook or Apple Mail.

Enable POP3 in gmail




  1. Sign in to gmail
  2. Click setting in the top of right
  3. Click forwarding and POP/IMAP
  4. Select enable Pop for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on
  5. Chose what to do with our message after we POP client or device receives them
  6. Save Changes
